year of engineering roadshow - Meet the parents

2018 was the Year of Engineering in the UK, and during this year I carried out a year long Roadshow taking a stand of engineering careers information out to shows and events to engage directly with parents and families.
This is what I achieved:

The Year of Engineering: Meet the Parents Roadshow was designed to take future engineering careers information on the road to meet parents and families face to face, to tell them more about the fantastic opportunities that there are in engineering for their children, and what some of these future careers will look like. Evidence from the IET ‘Inspiring the Next Generation of Engineers’ Report* has shown that by giving parents even a small amount of positive information, they can be convinced about the appeal of engineering careers. This roadshow, supported by the engineering industry and the inspiring individuals that work in it, visited 13 public shows across the UK during 2018 and built on the Year of Engineering publicity to bring engineering careers to life.
Thank you to the IET/IMechE Engineering Education Grant Scheme and to the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 for their financial support in making this Roadshow a reality. Thank you to all of the event and show organisers who allowed me to bring this information stand to their events free of charge, and thank you to all of the volunteers who helped staff the stand during the year. Without your support this would not have been possible.
This is what I achieved:
- An estimated 7800 people were reached during the year
- Over 25,000 leaflets and stickers were distributed
- 13 shows and events were attended over the period of 12 months – about two thirds of them at weekends and some for multiple days
- The activity took 42 full working days to deliver and organise
- It involved 12 nights away
